“Essentialism holds the keys to solving one of the great puzzles of life: How can we do less but accomplish more?”—Adam Grant, bestselling author of Think Again

Essentialism isn’t about getting more done in less time. It’s about getting only the right things done.

These two writings lure me into starting this book, and the book itself keeps me going. Absolute page turner.

What is essentialism?

It is “ Weniger, aber besser”, it means “less, but better:” Essentialism is not one more thing to do. It’s a whole new way of doing less, but better, in every area of our lives.

Essentialism is more than a time-management technique. It is a systematic discipline for discerning what is absolutely essential, then eliminating all non-essentials, so we can make the highest possible contribution toward the things that really matter.

By forcing us to apply more selective criteria for where to spend our precious time and energy, the disciplined pursuit of less empowers us to reclaim control of our own choices, instead of giving others the implicit permission to choose for us.

It is all about editing what you have and curating what comes into your life.

How to be an essentialist?

An essentialist thinks almost everything is non-essential

After reading the whole book, I have 18 questions that I decided to ponder furthermore on my journal, to become an essentialist (to my understanding).

  1. What quest do I want in my life?
  2. To what extend you are willing to reform your status quo for an opportunity or quest?
  3. Will you sacrifice non-essential relationships or opportunities to create space for your own exploration?
  4. What is your space for concentration? How can you create one?
  5. What really matters in your life?
  6. If you are a journalist, how would you see your life?
  7. If you are a film editor, how would you edit your life?
  8. If you are a curator, what would you select to come into your life
  9. What does your unconscious actions tells about you? If you don’t know go ask a trusted friend
  10. How many things or quest in your life now scores below 90? Why are you holding onto them
  11. What is your essential intent? Make it concrete and inspirational
  12. What are the obstacles in your life now? How can you remove them?
  13. Small steps make big differences! What is the recent small victories that deserves a celebration?
  14. What habit do you want to build? Can it be incorporated into your recent routines?
  15. Focus on your own game! What is THE game you need to focus now?
  16. Who are your opponents? How are they trying to steal your attention and how can you get it back?
  17. What is your set of criteria on prioritising things?
  18. What is the last moment you slipped back into non-essentialist mode? What is the trigger?
